How Hot Springs Strengthened Community Communication After Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene aftermath in a mountain town of North Carolina

When Hurricane Helene exposed communication gaps in western North Carolina, the Town of Hot Springs recognized the need for a more reliable way to reach residents with important information.

"After Hurricane Helene, we recognized the need for a reliable way to communicate with our community."
Kevin Reese, Public Information Officer, Town of Hot Springs, NC

For the town, that meant establishing its first dedicated emergency notification system — one that could support urgent alerts as well as the routine updates and community planning communications residents rely on throughout the year.

Creating a More Direct Connection With Residents

Hot Springs selected CodeRED by Crisis24 to give town officials a centralized way to communicate with the community during emergencies and everyday situations. But putting the system in place was only one part of the effort.

The town also focused on helping residents understand CodeRED, what types of messages they could expect to receive, and how to enroll. That community outreach helped generate strong enrollment and engagement, building a stronger resident contact base the town can rely on when important information needs to go out. Community response has been positive, reinforcing the value of having a direct, established way for town leaders to keep people informed.

Extending Communication Beyond Emergency Alerts

CodeRED now supports a range of communications for Hot Springs, from emergency notifications to routine updates and community planning information. And the town is looking at what comes next.

Hot Springs is exploring opportunities to expand CodeRED across additional departments, creating more ways for teams across the town to use the platform. Broader use could support additional public communications as well as internal notifications and staff coordination as needs evolve.

That gives Hot Springs the opportunity to get more value from a system already connecting the town with its residents — while creating a more coordinated approach to communication across departments.

Better Connected for What Comes Next

For Hot Springs, the result is more than a new notification system. The town has established a reliable communication channel, built strong community enrollment, and created a foundation it can continue to expand.

As Hot Springs strengthens its preparedness for future emergencies, CodeRED gives town leaders a direct way to keep residents informed, connected, and ready to act.
